We’re stoked to announce that Great Place to Work® has recognized Dovetail as...you guessed it—a Great Place to Work®!

Great Place to Work is the global authority on workplace culture, employee experience, and the leadership behaviors proven to deliver market-leading revenue, employee retention, and increased innovation.

Great Place to Work awards the certification based on an extensive and anonymous survey where an employer has to secure a score of 65 or more across all categories. We’re very proud to announce that we received an average score of 94!

While we’re chuffed, we’re not super surprised—everyone works so hard to maintain the culture that makes Dovetail such a great place to work—but still, it feels great to be recognized like this.

It’s no easy feat to maintain a people-first culture when we’re scaling so quickly (we increased headcount by 65 percent last quarter), but the scores have confirmed our dedication to our people and culture is paying off.

I guess you’re wondering how we did it. We think it has something to do with the following points.

It’s good value

First up, we live and breathe our values every day. Our founders made an intentional decision to wait before creating our company values so they would accurately reflect Dovetail’s existing culture rather than be ambitious, forced, top-down founder values.

Our values help us recognize and reward great work and give us a focal point to rally around. They’re the glue that holds everything together. That clarity and collective sense of purpose is a powerful driver of workplace satisfaction.

For the benefit of the team

Some companies throw a bunch of benefits at their people as a major motivator. Our benefits aren’t usually the main reason people join, but they certainly help them stay on.

Everyone owns a slice of the business, no matter their role or seniority. We have plenty of great perks like a personal learning and development budget, dog-friendly office, bike racks, annual retreats, paid parental leave, heaps of great events, amazing beers on tap, loads of snacks, and goodies—the list goes on. We look after our people, and that’s reflected in the feedback we receive.

PLG from the inside out

Most people spend a third of their life working. More than clocking in and out, people seek purpose in their work and desire to have impact in their role. Many Dovetailers come from jobs where they’ve been frustrated or dissatisfied from working tirelessly towards a goal only to be stopped by bureaucracy or politics.

When it comes to Dovetail, our product-led growth model means every last Dovetailer contributes to the business in a meaningful way. We emphasize efficiency and focus on shipping value and solving real customer problems.

There’s no mistaking it; you can see the impact you’re having through the feedback loop with our customers who routinely say things like, “The day I was introduced to Dovetail, I cried internally” or “I don’t know what we’d do without it.” Even though we have great motivators in the form of equity, pay, and perks—contributing meaningfully to a product people absolutely love gives Dovetailers a sense of purpose and a reason to get out of bed. No matter how much money a business has to throw at workplace culture, that’s something that simply can’t be bought.

Balancing act

We get it, there’s life at work and life outside of work. We want everyone to be healthy, take holidays, get time to give back, and have the financial resources and support they need. There’s a line in one of our values to “remember the human behind the work.” We’ve built a culture around every Dovetailer being uniquely themselves and we cultivate an environment of flexibility and balance.

We all feel a sense of agency over our own time and feel comfortable structuring our workday in a way that allows us to experience success and purpose. We provide a couple of organization-wide extra paid break days each quarter called KitKat days. We believe that every Dovetailer should spend that day in whatever fashion they’d like, free from the fear of being behind on their work or letting anyone down because we are all offline at the same time.

All included

We want every Dovetailer to bring their whole self to work, so we’ve taken measures to be as inclusive as possible. Dovetail is a proud participant in Project F’s Program 50/50 diversity and inclusion initiative, which helps us identify and surface underlying systemic and environmental issues known to derail women in careers in technology. We built our parental leave policy on an inclusive framework of 12 weeks of equal paid leave to support new parents.

Why we still believe in office culture

You may have heard some rumblings about our world-class in-person office culture being the best way for our high-performing and creative team to nail it. It’s a bit of a spicy take to have in the current climate with such a heavy pivot to remote work, but we love our bright and shiny offices, celebrating wins together, and working on highly collaborative and truly cross-functional projects.
