Contextual chat (beta)

Contextual chat is available in beta for workspaces on a paid plan. Admins can sign up to the beta and enable chat for their workspace in Settings.

Overview

Have a question about your customer data? Ask Dovetail with Contextual chat. Powered by Claude 3.7 Sonnet, chat allows anyone to query data in a conversational interface in Dovetail. With Chat, anyone is empowered to access important customer knowledge at any level across their Dovetail workspace.


How chat works

Chat works across your entire workspace and will auto-apply contextual filters based on where you are. This means you can drill down on a specific document or call, zoom out to all data across a Project or expand to ask questions to every piece of data in your workspace. Here are just a few ways you can use it.

Refine your approachAfter reviewing a sales call transcript, ask Chat: "What questions could I have asked to understand the customer's needs better?"
Uncover gapsWithin a research project, ask: "What adjacent topics are mentioned but not deeply explored in this data?" Use the insights to kickstart recruitment for your next study.
Generate high-level reportsAt the workspace level, ask: "Summarize the most common customer frustrations mentioned across all feedback projects this quarter" for a quick VoC report for leadership.
Accelerate onboardingNew team members can click into different projects and use Chat to ask: "What was the primary goal of this discovery research?" or "Summarize the key recommendations from this project" to get up to speed faster.

Start a new chat

  • To use Chat, click Chat in the sidebar or use keyboard shortcut ⌘ J or Ctrl J wherever you are in the workspace.

  • Next, interact with your data, asking questions like "How might I improve this conversation in the future?" if you're engaging with a customer or "What are key voice of customer themes for this month?" if you're looking to gain a holistic understanding of feedback.

  • From there, you can ask any follow up questions to help you discover more or capture your findings in an insight report, using Create insight, that you can share with your stakeholders.


View chat history

You can access past conversations you’ve had with chat at any time.

  • To do this, open a new chat and select Show chat history.

  • From there, you will be able to see a list of past conversations. Chats will be named based on what the conversation was about.

Chat is currently in beta! Use the thumbs up and thumbs down in chat to let us know how it’s doing. All feedback is shared with the Dovetail team to help us improve the experience.

In addition to speed and accuracy, we're working on citations and insight creation so you can share valuable and accurate with your stakeholders.

How is the model trained and deployed?

Dovetail uses a variety of market-leading LLMs. No customer data is used to improve or train our model—all training occurs before the models are deployed. Our models are constantly updated and improved to ensure you get the best experience.

Will my data be secure if I use Dovetail's magic features?

We understand research data can contain lots of personal and commercially sensitive information, and participants trust you to keep it safe. That’s why we are committed to keeping this data secure and confidential.

Unlike tools like ChatGPT—which may use your data to train their models—we use tailored processing infrastructure on AWS, meaning your data remains your own. We deploy all our models in the same place it’s already stored. The request is sent to the model, and the response is returned. Models aren’t learning from your data.

Why should I use Dovetail’s AI features over ChatGPT?

Dovetail’s tailored AI infrastructure means that your data won’t be used to train models for Dovetail or other customers—it’s fully secure. We select a model for the task at hand—whether that’s summarizing an insight or clustering highlights by theme. While ChatGPT enforces character limits, tailored infrastructure means that our AI features can handle whole transcripts and multiple highlights simultaneously.

Using Dovetail’s AI features ensures that all your customer data is in one place, so you don’t need to copy and paste data between tools and risk human error.
